FIRE AT VERULAM SCHOOL IN ST ALBANS

POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information after a fire at Verulam School in St Albans on Tuesday February 24.

It happened at the 11.30am and is believed to have started in a first floor classroom. The fire service sent five engines and about 200 staff and pupils were evacuated from the school. No one was injured in the blaze.

Brampton Road was closed through the incident and the fire was put out by 1pm.

The school was closed for the rest of the day, but due to reopen on Wednesday February 25.

There was also a small fire at about 11.30am at the school on the previous day.

A boy aged 16 from St Albans has been charged with two offences of arson recklessly endangering life. A boy aged 14 has been charged with arson recklessly endangering life for the offence on February 23.

Detective Constable Andrew Boyer, investigating, said: “Thank you to all staff and pupils for their co operation and patience in yesterday’s incident.

“Thankfully everyone was evacuated safely and accounted for.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who may have information on or witnessed the incident or the one the previous day to get in touch with me.”
